Quick Answer
Before ordering a custom plastic extrusion profile, confirm four points: the shape can be extruded, the material grade is suitable for profile extrusion, the material can handle the real working environment, and the wall thickness and structure are practical for tooling.
1. Is The Profile Suitable For Extrusion?
Plastic extrusion works best for long parts with the same cross-section, such as channels, seals, trims, rails, tubes, and covers. If the shape changes along the length, another process may be needed.
- Good fitLong profiles, channels, seals, rails, trims, tubes, and covers.
- Need reviewChanging shapes, deep undercuts, or local thick sections.
- Drawing checkCross-section, key dimensions, tolerance, and cut length.
- Sample checkPhoto, old sample, application position, and function.
2. Is The Material Suitable For Extrusion And The Use Environment?
Material should not be selected by name alone. For an OEM extrusion project, first check whether the material grade can run as a stable continuous profile, then check whether the finished part can handle the real temperature, load, UV, water, oil, chemical, or assembly condition.
- ExtrudabilityMelt flow, processing window, thermal stability, die swell, shrinkage, and surface finish affect whether the material can be extruded smoothly.
- FormulaPVC, flexible PVC, TPE, TPV, and filled materials depend heavily on stabilizer, lubricant, hardness, filler, color, and flame-retardant package.
- Profile shapeThe same material may behave differently in a simple strip, hollow profile, clip profile, soft seal, or tight-tolerance channel.
- Use environmentWorking temperature, long-term load, outdoor exposure, chemical contact, and assembly stress decide whether the material is safe for real use.
| Material | Extrusion review point | Temperature / use note |
|---|---|---|
| Rigid PVC | Good for rigid profiles, channels, trims, covers, and cable-related parts when formula and cooling are controlled. | Near higher temperatures, check grade, wall thickness, load, and deformation risk instead of using material name only. |
| Flexible PVC / TPE / TPV | Good for seals, gaskets, soft lips, protective edges, and flexible profiles. | Hardness, rebound, compression, low-temperature flexibility, and aging need sample confirmation. |
| PE | Can be used for flexible or chemical-resistant profiles, but shrinkage and stiffness need review. | Confirm whether the profile needs straightness, tight tolerance, or strong clipping force. |
| PP | Useful when higher heat or chemical resistance is needed, but extrusion stability depends on grade and profile shape. | Review shrinkage, bending, surface finish, and whether the part must stay straight after cooling. |
| ABS | Can fit rigid cosmetic or structural profiles when the grade and processing route are suitable. | Check drying, surface requirement, impact resistance, and working temperature before tooling. |
| EVA | Useful for soft and flexible profile directions, depending on grade. | Heat resistance, softness, and long-term compression should be checked by sample. |
This table is for early screening. The final material should be confirmed by resin grade, formula, datasheet, extrusion sample, application temperature, load, and assembly test.
3. Is The Wall Thickness Practical?
Many custom extrusion profiles use about 1.0–4.0 mm wall thickness. Small trims and seals may be thinner. Structural or hollow profiles may need 2.0–5.0 mm or more.
Very thin, very thick, or uneven walls can affect cooling, tolerance, strength, straightness, and production stability.
4. Does The Structure Need Adjustment?
Lips, ribs, hollow cavities, snap-fit areas, adhesive surfaces, holes, printing, punching, and cut-to-length packing can all change the extrusion die design. Small changes before tooling often make production more stable.
